Information regarding private life of founder of Coop Himmemblau is hard to find, because of that, the design brief will be the one that has been posted on the arch1390 blog. (a typical design brief)

but the shape of the house will be interpreted based on Coop's designs, so the ideology or concept or basic idea for the design of the building will be produced by combining bits of ideas from other designs.

Ass 1

The project is mainly about how to divide the spaces that’s shaped from basic polygons into a house with some requirements like bedroom quantity, garage, etc. The polygons that I have chosen are sphere, torus, and pyramid. At first, I was really interested in torus because it’s such a rare polygon as the requirement of the shape of the building. Sphere is more common, but I think it’s also more challenging compared to other simpler polygons. Triangle was chosen just because I think there should be something a bit more simple compared to the other two polygons, just so that the building doesn’t look just an imagination.
The main problem with these polygons is the height, since I made the torus standing instead of parallel to the ground because in my opinion placing it that way is more challenging. With the height problem occurring due to the shape of the torus that curving all the way around, if you put a level inside the torus, it’ll give different height of the ceilings and you might have some part of the room that is not even 1.5m.
Other problem that I encounter is the circulation. Since it’s a torus with a sphere in the middle, a lift is actually necessary because people should climb the building through stairs, the distance is pretty far and it’ll just tiring for them to go to the top level from the ground level. So a lift is provided around the middle area of the building, but outside the torus and sphere. After having the lift, I still need to design a fire safety regulation. Because of that there are stairs around the building, and extruded platforms for the stairs area. The simpler problem would be the connection between the pyramid and the torus. It made a pretty good harmony, but what I found is that the flat surface of the triangle actually made the space looks like a cage, which I don’t really like.

This is the basic layout and idea : crystal as the middle and main part, act as the partisan for the pictures; blue patterns as the cloud bit. There are changes that i think i can do to improve the visualization, the there will be updates.

On the first design, the shapes that i use is torus, sphere and pyramid. The idea starts from the sphere in the middle, wrapped by the torus which has the same smoothness effect as sphere, and then supported by pyramid which the shape is really stiff. The main door will be located on the pyramid, connected to a little bit of the torus which has elevator on it. Then the sphere in the middle is dining room and kitchen. The rooms will be located around the torus. In this part i haven't draw how i will divide them.

This Second design is more simplistic and it looks more build able compared to the first one, but at the same time its too boring. The sphere has been modified into an egg shape sphere and will act as the living room. The torus will become balcony that completely surrounds the living room. The other rest of the room will be placed on the tube shaped part. The top part of the tube will be dining room and kitchen, and below it will be bedrooms. On the ground floor there will be a small living room just for the entrance, and then access to the rest of the levels will be lift and stairs.

Tutorials 9/8/2013

The shape is inspired by the abstractness of the shape of the building.  The building has a lot of different shapes on the surface, that'w why to show that the lines on the model doesn't continuously connected in one direction.

This model's figure is attain by analyzing the texture and shape of the building. It has rhombus shapes on the surface texture and the shape has a lot of edges, that's why even the texture and the shape have a lot of corner and edges.

The 3D model is made to replica the part of the building that becomes the signature of the building; which is the front shape that looks like a space ship with a lot of polygons, and looks like it's produced by mashing some polygons.

When using one piece of paper to reflect the idea of the building, it;s more systematic and harder to think to get the idea. But once you actually get the system, the result would be really conceptual. The "one piece" reason made me think a lot about pouring a lot of idea into singular object, like "one picture that says a thousand words."

But when we are allowed to use more than one piece of paper, our brain is more relax but at the same time we become lazier to think about ideas. Because of that the concept is a bit less than the concept that's reflected when we have to use one piece of paper only. And the presentation is also going down due to the relax condition.

So the main idea is when we are under some amount of pressure, we are able to produce some amazing design.
